Promethean Particles has been awarded highly commended status in this year’s Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Global Awards 2020 within the Research Project category.
Following a series of finalist presentations on November 3, the Nottingham-based company received the accolade for its participation in the research project, ICEMART, alongside BAE Systems, CAV Advanced Technologies, GKN Aerospace Services, London South Bank University, Opus Materials Technologies, PPG Industries and TWI UK.
The presentation, led by Dr. Selina Ambrose, Technical Manager at Promethean Particles, explained the ground-breaking process behind ICEMART – an innovative passive ice-repellent coating system that’s based on super-hydrophobic technology developed for use within the aviation industry, but could be applied to the marine and energy sectors too.
“It was a pleasure to present the ICEMART project in the finalists’ webinar,” commented Dr. Ambrose. “By developing super hydrophobic nanoparticles for an ice-repellent coating, our work in the ICEMART project is tackling a significant global issue. This passive coating would reduce ice adhesion on aircraft, and subsequent drag, and eliminate 100 million litres of de-icing fluid discharge currently used on aircraft. This would increase both efficiency and payload and generates a saving of around £7bn in fuel costs and 80m tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.
“We’re delighted to receive highly commended status from the judges at the IChemE Global Awards this year and I am proud of our team for their accomplishment,” added James Stephenson, Chief Executive Officer of Promethean. “On behalf of the entire Promethean team, our thanks go to all of our partners for their collaboration and commitment on the ICEMART research project.”
