Promethean MOFs Power the Launch of the Ahbstra ‘Ark’

July 31, 2026

Promethean Particles is proud to celebrate the launch of Ahbstra‘s ‘ARK’, an innovative atmospheric water harvesting system that utilises ProMOF® 3100 manufactured and supplied by Promethean to generate clean drinking water directly from air. The ARK is capable of producing up to 500 litres of water per day, even in hot and arid environments, representing a significant milestone in the commercial application of metal-organic framework (MOF) technology.

For many years, MOFs have been recognised as one of the most promising classes of advanced materials. Their exceptional internal surface areas and ability to selectively capture molecules make them attractive for applications ranging from carbon capture and gas separation to water harvesting and dehumidification. Yet, despite their promise, bringing MOF-enabled products from the laboratory into the hands of customers has remained a major challenge. The launch of the Ahbstra ARK demonstrates how that challenge is now being overcome.

Water scarcity is increasingly recognised as one of the world’s most significant environmental and societal challenges. Across many regions, groundwater resources are under pressure, droughts are becoming more frequent, and access to reliable fresh water is becoming less certain. Atmospheric water harvesting offers a compelling alternative by extracting water vapour directly from the air and converting it into high-quality drinking water. Unlike many conventional systems that rely on condensation and perform best in humid conditions, MOF-based systems can operate efficiently even in very dry climates.

The Ahbstra ARK showcases the potential of this approach. By combining innovative engineering with advanced MOF materials, Ahbstra has created a commercially deployable solution capable of providing water independence for homes, developments and communities in water-stressed regions. The launch is particularly significant because it demonstrates that MOF-enabled atmospheric water harvesting has progressed beyond research and pilot projects into commercial reality.

For Promethean, the project represents the embodiment of the company’s brand promise of ‘Potential Made Possible.’ The potential of MOFs to transform water harvesting has been understood for years. However, real-world impact depends on the ability to manufacture these advanced materials reliably, consistently, and at scale. Through its proprietary continuous-flow manufacturing technology, Promethean has developed the capability to supply MOFs in the quantities and quality required for commercial deployment, helping customers translate breakthrough science into practical solutions.

Commenting on the launch, James Stephenson, Chief Executive Officer of Promethean Particles, said:

“The launch of the Ahbstra ARK is a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when innovative engineering is combined with scalable advanced materials manufacturing. The ability of MOFs to harvest water from air has been recognised for many years, but creating a commercially viable product requires much more than great science. It requires scalable manufacturing, robust engineering and a determination to turn innovation into something that can create real-world impact and value.

At Promethean, we don’t just build the bridge between scientific promise and commercial deployment, we help our customers cross it, enabling breakthrough technologies to reach the market and create meaningful impact. We are incredibly proud that our ProMOF® 3100 material is helping make the Ahbstra ARK possible and congratulate the entire Ahbstra team on this significant achievement.

The launch of the ARK demonstrates that MOFs have moved beyond the laboratory and are now addressing some of the world’s most important challenges. We believe this is an important milestone not only for Ahbstra and Promethean, but for the continued commercialisation of MOF-based technologies globally.”

This is an exciting milestone for both companies and a further demonstration of the role advanced materials can play in addressing global sustainability challenges. As demand grows for innovative solutions in areas such as water security, carbon capture and clean energy, Promethean remains focused on enabling the successful commercial deployment of MOF technology across a growing range of applications. The Ahbstra ARK is a clear example of that vision becoming reality.
